Idol Worship or Desecration

Monday, September 22, 2008

I have never been to Maharashtra, the place where Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great pomp and show. But I have seen it on TV. It really looks magnificient. Much like the Durga Puja in Bengal. I was shocked to see the 'day after' Ganapati is given a send off. Immersing such a huge number of idols does cause pollution and death of sea life living in the vicinity of the place where these immersions actually happen. This, however is not the sore point, especially when the matter relates to religious sentiments of people. But isn't it shameful to see the fate of these idols the very next day after the festival. I got a few pictures in a forwarded mail and I was shocked to see the fate of these idols when the festivities end. It makes me question - Is the celebration really a mark of respect for the deity?

The answer is right below:

Is this the heavenly abode of Ganapati?
Bulldozed!

Desecration - Who's to be blamed?
